This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

"Turning Off the Headlights at the First Sign of Dawn"?
Some scientists are concerned that the UK government is prematurely scrapping a number of nationwide Covid surveillance programmes (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/13/pandemic-is-not-over-ministers-criticised-after-scrapping-uk-covid-surveillance). The React study that monthly randomly tests circa 150,000 people across England, to see how many are Coronavirus-infected, will cease at the end of March. Funding will also be withdrawn from the Zoe Covid symptoms study as well as the Siren and Vidaldi programmes (respectively studing infection in health workers and care homes). The Comix social contacts (important in transmission) study will also close. With weird timing, free mass testing for the virus is due to end on 'All Fool's Day' (April 1st). A number of authorities are currently seeing global signs of an emerging 6th wave of Covid19 infections. The mass scrapping nationwide Covid surveillance programmes is obviously intended to save money. Some scientists feel, however, that this reflex action, will almost certainly end up costing more money in the longer term. It's certainly likely to enable the Sars-CoV-2 virus to linger longer in the UK.
