This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Killing Without Kindness?
Killing techniques on US Turkey and Chicken farms clearly illustrate the gulf in animal welfare standards between the EU and that country. Millions of US birds, contracting highly virulent bird 'flu, are killed by being sprayed with fire fighting foam or elevated levels of carbon dioxide (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/08/theyre-cooking-them-alive-calls-to-ban-cruel-killing-methods-on-us-farms). Neither method is legal on EU farms. It's unlikely that people in the UK would buy poultry products, if they knew about these cruel 'disposal' techniques.
