This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Coal Face Stupidity?
There is clearly a problem with energy supplies in the UK (as there is currently in many European countries). It seems, however, very retrograde to grant permission to dig more coal at the Aberpergwm mine in Glynneath, South Wales (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/18/not-the-future-we-should-be-going-for-the-reopening-of-waless-aberpergwm-coalmine). Coal is certainly the most polluting of the non-renewables. Generating electricity by burning biomass is bad enough. Converting the biomass generating stations back to coal is far worse. It would be very much better to extend wind and solar power generation as well as improving the insulation of buildings. Coal, renewed North Sea oil exploration, nuclear and fracking all have an air of wildly flailing about for a 'quick fix'. Using more coal, would certainly be a backwards move, in attempting to deal with the climate crisis.
