This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'War' On Attempts to Curb the Climate Crisis?
Attempts to curb the climate crisis were already looking exceedingly dodgy even after COP26 in Glasgow. Everything seemed to depend, on what might be described, as a 'pledge and a prayer'. The UN Secretary General now says the war in Ukraine, risks even putting these modest 'global targets' out of reach (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/21/ukraine-war-threatens-global-heating-goals-warns-un-chief). The UN chief is particularly concerned that many counties appear to be responding to the associated energy crisis, by already increasing or planning to increase their use of fossil fuels. 'Alternative' producers of gas, oil and coal are rubbing their hands in glee. The calculations at COP26 have not, however, changed. Avoiding exceeding global temperatures 1.5 degrees Centigrade above pre-Industrial levels always looked a) possibly inadequate and b) relatively unlikely. It looks as if, what is happening, is actually a war on the planet and its climate.
