This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Birder's Bonus 216
'Alfie', a Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo) is reportedly terrorising Norfolk. It's a frisky time of year and he's given to dive-bombing joggers etc (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/11/he-swoops-to-conquer-hormonal-owl-livens-up-norfolk-nights). 'Alfie' weighs about 4 kg with a wingspan of 2 M. Eurasian eagle owls are no longer native to the UK. 'Alfie' apparently escaped from an aviary in 2020 and seems to be thriving in the 'wild'. Escaped members of this species have even bred successfully in the UK (presumably when they have not been imprinted on their human handlers?).
