This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Doug: The Giant Non-Potato
A couple from Hamilton, New Zealand thought they had found the world's biggest potato. They christened their 7.8 kg tuber 'Doug' and sent their claim off to the Guiness Book of Records. A DNA sample from 'Doug', however, has now revealed 'he' is the tuber of a gourd (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/16/giant-new-zealand-potato-is-not-in-fact-a-potato-guinness-world-records-rules). 'Doug', apparently, tasted like a potato but is of the wrong species. 'He's' not a 'chip off the old block', as they say. So, the UK retains the current record at just under 5 kg.
