This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Adapting Our Way Out of the Climate Crisis?
Katherine Heyhoe (Chief Scientist for Nature Conservancy in the US) opines that the world cannot adapt its way out of the climate crisis (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/01/we-cannot-adapt-our-way-out-of-climate-crisis-warns-leading-scientist). Heyhoe says that, although ways of increasing climate resilience are needed, they will be unable to soften the impact sufficiently to produce a viable planet. She rightly points out that there is actually no substitute for urgently cutting 'greenhouse gases'. Meanwhile, the big news in the UK, is that hundreds of people are being stopped from flying to their 'deserved' foreign holiday at half term, by airline cancellations (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-31/tui-cancels-nearly-200-flights-as-travel-chaos-worsens). These cancellations are largely down to the airlines and airports having post-Covid pandemic staff shortages. They need more security-checked people to man desks and operate baggage handling etc. Airlines complain about government and government complains about airlines. Nobody points out that having more flights is not compatible with reducing 'greenhouse gas' emissions.
