This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

A Risky Business?
The killings of journalist Dom Phillips and environmental activist Bruno Pereira in the Amazon's Javari valley, although horrendous, are far from unique (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jun/16/dom-phillips-bruno-pereira-death-war-on-nature). The Earth's few remaining biodiverse areas easily attract organized crime and criminal governments for quick profits. These criminals (both private and political) want to exploit timber, water and minerals, without any regard for unique ecologies on which we depend or the indigenous communities standing in their way. Sadly, the world needs more people like Phillips and Pereira, prepared to put themselves in harm's way, to protect the guardians of forests and animals.
