This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Hitting the Bottle!
Perhaps all brewers will reach the parts pioneered by Carlsberg? That Scandinavian company is to trial recyclable fibre beer bottles (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/22/8000-green-bottles-carlsberg-trials-fibre-beer-containers). The new Carlsberg 'bottles' have a wood-based fibre shell, with a polymer lining generated from plant-based polyethylene furanoate. These containers are claimed to 'retain the same taste and fizziness' as glass bottles. It's even said that, their insulating properties, could keep beer colder for longer! Carlberg will trial 8000 of the new beer containers in Europe (including the UK, France and Poland). The company are, however, still working on a 'green' replacement top for their new 'bottles'. It will be interesting to assess, whether these recyclable fibre beer bottles, are really 'greener' than collecting, washing and re-using the glass alternatives.
