This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Refuelling Hunger?
Generating biofuels is a slight improvement on extracting coal, natural gas and oil for energy production. No methane is released in biofuel generation. Biofuels do not, however, really do anything to solve the problem of 'greenhouse gas' emissions and subsequent global heating. Biofuels are basically carbon dioxide in and carbon dioxide out! In spite of this, a US Deputy Secretary for Agriculture has confirmed that her country will press ahead with biofuels production (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/24/us-to-proceed-with-production-of-biofuels-despite-global-food-crisis). The war in Ukraine is exaccerbating a global food crisis. The Ukrainians are major producers of grain, destined mainly for poorer parts of the world (e.g. in Africa). The export of Ukrainian grain (and the freeing up of storage for the next harvest), is now being prevented by the Russian blockade of Odessa and other ports. Food shortages will inevitably add to unrest in many grain-dependent, less developed countries. The question has to be posed 'Would it not be better for the US farmers to sell a proportion of their grain to allievate hunger, rather than to deliver it for biofuel production?' The current US agricultural arrangement simply makes food blockades a more potent weapon, without solving climate change.
