This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Feel the Beet(root)?
People with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) have low levels of nitric oxide (NO). NO is an important information chemical. Amongst its many functions, it reduces inflammation. As inflammation increases the probability of a heart attack, increasing NO levels could benefit CHD sufferers (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/jun/09/beetroot-juice-coronary-heart-disease-nitric-oxide-levels). A study was performed on 114 (non-CHD) volunteers. They had their inflammation mechanisms stimulated by e.g. injection of typhoid vaccine. All, were given a daily glass of beetroot juice to drink. Half the subjects had regular beetroot juice, whereas the remainder drank juice with nitrates removed. Subjects drinking regular beetroot juice, had higher levels of NO than counterparts consuming nitrate-free juice. Suppression of inflammation would be higher in the former group. It's concluded, that drinking a daily glass of beetroot juice, is an effective way of introducing inorganic nitrate into the diet. A glass a day, for CHD sufferers, might keep the heart attack away!
