Budget Airlines: 'Green' Around the Gills?

It obviously suits budget airlines to burnish their real or imagined 'green' credentials.The business model of budget airlines, requires them to convince their passengers they are virtuous. This makes it easier to sell tickets. In this respect, the Easyjet airline have been on an interesting PR journey (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/sep/26/easyjet-will-stop-offsetting-carbon-emissions-from-planes-roadmap-net-zero). In 2019, they announced, to a great fanfare, that Easyjet would spend £25m per year to 'offset' its 'greenhouse gas' emissions. They claimed Easyjet's carbon dioxide release would be completely 'balanced', by paying folk to reduce deforestation in other parts of the globe. Most critics dismissed this as 'greenwashing'. There is no guarantee, emissions are actually saved, on anything like the needed scale. Easyjet are consequently to stop their offsetting programme in December 2022. Their replacement wheeze, is a 'roadmap to net zero by 2050'. Easyjet claim that, by 2050, they will be using more sustainable aviation fuel (including hydrogen power?); more fuel-efficient aircraft and carbon capture. The only trouble with the 'roadmap', is that the described technologies are either a) in their infancy or b) not yet developed. 'Going green' for airlines, seems involve one fairy tale after another? The easiest way to reduce aircraft 'greenhouse gas' emissions, is to reduce the number of flights. That's not on airline agendas.
