This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Getting Your 'Forever Chemical' Exposure Before You Even Enter this World?
Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are the so-called 'forever chemicals', as they are not broken down in the environment. This 'family' of 12,000 synthetic substances are employed commercially to make products water; stain and/or heat resistant. PFAS are toxic, causing health complications in foetuses and young children, as well as in later life. There is now evidence that exposure in the womb is ubiquitous (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/sep/23/forever-chemicals-found-umbilical-cord-blood-samples-studies). Forty studies, over the last 4 years, have measured PFAS in umbilical cord blood samples. The studies have been carried out in countries all over the world. In total, there are 30,000 samples. Every single one contained PFAS! So far as humans are concerned, these chemicals are, not only 'forever', they are now 'omnipresent'!
