This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Just in Case You Missed Out in the Womb?
We have already learned that Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are found in all umbilical cord blood samples measured (see the earlier post). A US study, at Notre Dame University, has also found these 'forever chemicals' in more than 33% of tested children's clothes (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/sep/21/toxic-forever-chemicals-school-uniforms-pfas). PFAS are used to make garments stain and water-resistant. It's consequently predictable, that 65% of tested children's school uniforms; raincoats; snowsuits; mittens; bibs; hats and even stroller covers, were impregnated with high levels of these chemicals. The kids, wearing these treated items, may look clean and smart. Their general health and development are, however, being compromised.
