This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Events, My Dear Boy, Events'
'Events, my dear boy, events' is a quote credited in the 1960s to UK Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan. It was an answer to a journalist, who asked him what were his greatest challenges? For tech billionaires, the modern incarnations of 'events' are things like:- environmental collapse; social unrest; nuclear explosions; solar storms; unstoppable viruses or malacious computer hacks taking everything down. Douglas Rushoff, in his book, 'Survival of the Richest' paints a very scary picture (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2022/sep/04/super-rich-prepper-bunkers-apocalypse-survival-richest-rushkoff). Rushoff opines that 'winning', so far as tech billionaires are concerned, 'means earning enough money to insulate themselves from the damage they are creating by earning money in that way'. Many tech billionaires appear to be now purchasing luxurious 'bolt holes', with impressive security, designed to enable them to survive the 'events' they are helping to generate. This can variously mean relocating, in the event of a crisis, to Mars; Alaska; New Zealand or even remote, self-sufficient farms in undisclosed locations. There are even companies dedicated to designing and selling luxurious 'bolt holes', with swimming pools; gyms; lockable food stores and military-style security. What is extremely sad, is that these rich boys (and they are overwhelmingly 'boys') appear to have little concern for the rest of the folk with whom they share the planet. Their major worry appears to be how to keep security staff loyal to them, when money might have no meaning!
