This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Fierce Fiona Comes to Canada from the Caribbean
Hurricane Fiona, after killing at least 5 people in the Caribbean, rushed up to Canada's Atlantic Provinces (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/sep/25/canadas-military-sent-to-help-recovery-after-storm-fiona-batters-coast). What is now classed as Sub-Tropical Storm Fiona, arrived in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Quebec. The storm brought hurricane-strength winds, torrential rain and enormous waves to this area. Fiona has brought down trees, ripped roofs off houses and disrupted power supplies. One of the worst-impacted places is Port Aux Basques, where 8-12 buildings have been washed into the sea. The Canadian army has had to be mobilised to help deal with the devastation. Hopefully, nobody has been killed. One woman, however, has been reported missing. Canadian climate change, clearly isn't limited to record summer temperatures on the Pacific side!
