Our Friends Electric?

German industrialists claim soaring energy costs, as well as a chronic shortage of materials and parts, are hampering the production and sales of electric cars. They even maintain that the 'future' of the electric car is in doubt. One must emphasise, however, that the electric car's fuel is not the problem. The problem is that car manufacturers want to replace each petrol and diesel vehicle with an electric alternative. That was always going to take massive amounts of energy and materials (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/sep/12/soaring-energy-costs-could-threaten-future-of-electric-cars-experts-warn). Petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles have to be phased out. We must do this (along with taking many other actions) if we are serious about attempting to limit the impacts of their emissions on global heating and air quality. The Ukraine war is making life very difficult for people in many parts of the world. One could even argue that this war is also an attack on human attempts to limit climate change. The last thing anyone on this planet needs, is a return to former the levels of useage of Russian oil and gas in Germany (and elsewhere). Perhaps all car manufacturers should consider an immediate halt to any further production of petrol/diesel-fuelled vehicles? They might also focus on the production of electric delivery vans, trucks and buses. These can serve most functions in urban locations. It is clearly no longer feasible for every person on the planet to each have their own electric car. Extra engineering capacity might be best directed to the rapid production of low carbon electricity generation. Going back to coal would be very dangerous. Nuclear takes too long (and much of the fuel also comes from Russia). Perhaps it's also time for a total change of emphasis in car manufacturing?

Food For Thought?

The link between global heating and food prices is clearly illustrated in a recent CarbonBrief ( https://www.carbonbrief.org/five-charts-ho...
