This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

There's a Probable Downside to Bee Bus Stops
The idea of converting bus shelter roofs into miniature gardens, full of pollinator-friendly plants, seems to have originated in Utrecht (The Netherlands). There are now plans for creating more than 1000 of these 'bee bus stops' in England and Wales (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/sep/24/bus-shelter-roofs-turned-into-gardens-for-bees-butterflies-aoe). Mini roof gardens, with wild strawberries, poppies and pansies, are an attractive proposition. There is, however, a problem with siting them in urbanised areas, like city centres. Butterflies and bees are frequent victims of collisions with cars, buses and trucks. The 'bee bus stops' might tempt them to their doom?
