Physician Heal Thy Planet?

There's a clear dilemma for medical doctors who campaign against climate change. Many of these individuals are in a good position to evaluate the real consequences of global heating. They risk, however, appearing before the Medical Practioner's Tribunal Service (MPTS). The MPTS is an arm of the General Medical Council, that can order them 'struck off' i.e. have their licence to practice medicine removed. All medics are under a legal obligation to inform the MPTS, if they have been charged or convicted of a criminal offense. Many areas of protest, in the UK, have been increasingly criminalised. One can, for example, be arrested for simply walking slowly down a road or blocking access to a company's headquarters. There's even a sense that what's protested about is more important that what's actually done. Blocking a road attracts more opprobium than destroying a car number-plate recognition camera (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/mar/16/uk-doctors-involved-in-climate-protests-face-threat-of-being-struck-off). It seems wholly inappropriate, if medically-qualified folk effectively permanently lose their profession, for relatively minor actions. The danger, however, runs much deeper. Many other professions also have bodies that can effectively 'strike off' folk, for bringing their institution and/or the profession into 'disrepute'. This is the case for teaching (from Primary to University level); law; social services; civil service; local government and the police, themselves. There must be a concern that 'only' children and some manual workers will be able to risk demonstrating on certain issues. Even the children, however, could find their ability to later enter certain professions curtailed!
