This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Substitute!
The consumer group, Which? surveyed 3000 regular users of online supermarket orders. Respondents used a number of different suppliers and the poll was conducted between October and November 2023. The people polled, were asked to recall if they had had ordered items substituted. About one third said this was the case. Some of the reported substitutions received were, however, distinctly odd (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/mar/16/mushrooms-swapped-for-tampons-among-bizarre-uk-supermarket-substitutions). Substitutions included mushrooms for tampons; frozen pizza for a can of peaches; cream crackers in place of Christmas crackers; 10 cans of beer for a packet of washing powder; allergy tablets replacing an anti-allergy duvet; a bag of flour for a loaf of bread; onions instead of a bag of cheese and onion crisps (chips) and meat sausages to 'replace' their vegetarian equivalent. This list is superficially amusing but it could pose a serious problem for folk with specific dietary requirements and/or medical conditions.
