This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Spreading Like Wildfires
This has been the worst July on the planet for wildfires since 2003, when collected satellite imaging records began (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/06/last-month-worst-july-wildfires-since-2003). Thus far (and the season has by no means finished in parts of the globe), wildfires have released more than 340 megatonnes of carbon into the atmosphere this year. The fires are, of course, largely a consequence of extreme heat and prolonged drought (with some human help?). The release of the carbon will make the next wildfire seasons even worse.
