An 'L'-Shaped Cure For Hiccups

Singultus (hiccups) is caused by sudden contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles (used in breathing). This produces an abrupt intake of air, which causes the glottis (normally separating air and food intake) to shut, producing the characteristic 'hic' sound. The FISST (or HiccAway) is an 'L'-shaped plastic straw with a mouthpiece at one end and an adjustable cap, with a pressure valve, at the other. The victim of hiccups places the HiccAway in a glass of water and sips. The innervations of the diaphragm and the intercostals are kept busy and singultus ceases.
