This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Not a Sausage More!
The Northern Ireland protocol was a temporary arrangement, giving a 'grace period' for imports from mainland Britain. The protocol was put in place, to allow UK imports to continue whilst attempts were made to sort out the post-Brexit trading relationship between the EU and the UK. Because of the 'Good Friday' agreement, it was thought essential not to have a land border between NI and Eire. The UK appears to be proposing to unilaterally extend the grace period, when it is scheduled to run out at the end of June. The EU is, predictably unhappy (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/08/tensions-rise-over-eu-trade-row-with-uk-over-sausage-sales). The EU is concerned about its biosecurity. It is threatening tariffs and quotas on some products, if the Brexit deal is overridden. These penalties may be applied to chilled meats such as mince and sausages.
