This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Oil Versus Elephants
ReconAfrica, a Canadian oil and gas company, appears excited at having leased 34,000 square miles of land in the Kavango basin. ReconAfrica, predict that the resulting oil field, could generate between 60 and 120 billion barrels. This, they say, would transform the economic prospects, of a region stretching across Botswana and Namibia (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jun/20/new-oilfield-in-african-wilderness-threatens-lives-of-130000-elephants). Conservationists are not so happy at the prospect of getting an oil field in the Kavango Basin. They claim it will destroy unique ecosystems, threaten 130,000 of the endangered African elephants who roam in this area, as well as having negative effects on local communities. One might also add, that the last thing the planet needs are extra billions of barrels of oil!
