This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Bad News From NASA
Scientists from NASA (the US space agency) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have gathered information from floating devices, positioned in seas across the globe. The scientists found that our planet is trapping twice as much heat now, than was the case in 2005 (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/jun/17/earth-trapping-heat-study-nasa-noaa). The study basically looks at energy imbalance. Energy imbalance is the difference between the solar energy absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere/surface and that reflected back into space. This doubling between 2005 and 2019 seems partly related to human-mediated changes and partly down to natural oceanic changes. Most of the excess energy from the sun finishes up in the oceans. The data strongly suggests that the Earth is heating up more quickly than was ever anticipated, with inevitable consequences for climate change.
