This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Dirty Bathing Water
The EU Environmental Watchdog generally places the UK at the bottom of lists of countries, having coastal and inland sites with excellent bathing water quality (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jun/01/uk-ranked-last-in-europe-for-bathing-water-quality-in-2020). The 2020 table was no exception, even though Covid restrictions prevented samples being taken at most UK sites. Those that were tested generated 12 sites rated as 'poor', 29 as 'sufficient' and 32 as 'good'. Although water qualties have been improving in most EU countries, the UK has resolutely allowed raw sewage to be discharged into bathing waters in numerous locations. 29 EU countries had a least 50% of their monitored sites graded 'excellent'. Many had over 70% of their bathing sites in this category. The only EU country that can currently rival the UK, is Poland. I wonder if the EU will continue to monitor UK bathing sites post Brexit? They might as well assume Brits like to splash around in contaminated waters.
