A Giant Leap For Extra-Terrestrial Life?

The presence of liquid water, is often cited as a pre-requisite for life. Jupiter's moon, Europa has lines on its frozen surface that appear 'strikingly similar' to those on the Greenland ice sheet. This is taken as evidence that there may be pools of salty water, under Europa's ice (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/apr/19/jupiters-moon-europa-may-have-water-life-could-exist). The presence of underground pools of salty water, not far below Europa's surface, would, it is argued, make them 'promising spots' in the search for signs of extra-terrestrial life. Life may be possible, especially if it, as some have claimed, can be transferred on meteors, comets etc. If any life exists on Europa, however, it's likely to be limited to the bacterial grade of organisation. There is also a problem of providing energy for living organisms in this location. Under an ice sheet, at Europa's distance from the sun, sunlight would exert only feeble effects. There is also little evidence of the alternative of reliable volcanic activity on Europa. We, clearly, won't be communicating with Jovians anytime soon!

Food For Thought?

The link between global heating and food prices is clearly illustrated in a recent CarbonBrief ( https://www.carbonbrief.org/five-charts-ho...
