This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Faster Fowl
The genetically-modified Ross 308 chicken was developed and owned by Aviagen. This breed, reaches its 'kill weight' in only 35 days This is some three times faster than most older chicken lines (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/apr/16/cheaper-than-chips-frankenchicken-at-the-centre-of-fight-for-animal-welfare). In the UK, a Ross 308 chicken can be sold for less than £2.50. Naturally, this makes the breed popular with chicken rearers. Animal welfare folk suggest, however, the Ross 308 grows so quickly, its heart and bone structure struggle to cope. They point to research, showing the Ross 308 has higher incidences of mortality, lameness and muscle disease than slower growing breeds. The Animal Welfarists would, consequently, like the Ross 308 banned.
