This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Bacteria Rocking On?
A team from University College London (UCL) suggest they have found early micro-fossils in sedimentary rocks from Quebec, Canada (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/apr/13/microfossils-may-be-evidence-life-began-very-quickly-after-earth-formed). The presumed micro-fossils were in iron-rich haematite deposits, laid down about 300 million years ago. The UCL team claim the micro-fossils, could have been produced by bacteria, thriving near hydrothermal vents on the Earth's surface. If true, life on Earth was established much earlier than had been previously thought. This finding would also make it more likely that life routinely develops on other planets. It also confirms that bacteria are well-placed to recolonise our planet, if uncontrollable global heating wipes out all more complex organisms. So, that's OK then?
