This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Mass Splash?
Ninety years ago, there was a mass trespass by walkers on Kinder Scout (the highest peak in Derbyshire) " to take action to open up the fine country at present denied to us". There were arrests but the trespass eventually led to the setting up of The Peak District National Park (the UK's first) and the 'right to roam' in parts of England. Now, a massed trespass of wild swimmers is planned in Kinder reservoir (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/apr/23/kinder-reservoir-mass-trespass-swimpass-peak-district-wild-swimmers). All are welcome and Northerners are tough. The temperature of the water in Kinder Reservoir will, however, be around 10 degrees Centigrade. We may end up with a right to roam and a right to splash in the National Park. If we also get the right to bike, we can have a triathlon!
