This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Shut Up, Whilst We Listen to the Weather Forecast!
Activist, Miranda Whelehan, describes going on TV's Good Morning Britain to explain the motivations behind Just Stop Oil (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/apr/13/just-stop-oil-climate-crisis-good-morning-britain). Whelehan claims that, before the programme, she hadn't seen the 2021 satirical film 'Don't Look Up'. Many of her friends, however, pointed out marked parallels between her experience and parts of that film. The film's section, where Leonardo Di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence's characters go on prime-time TV, attempting to explain the dangers posed by the approaching asteroid, seemed to replicate Whelehan's experience. She says her interviewer appeared almost offended by the simplicity of her message (namely, that extracting oil needed to stop now, to limit climate change). His admonition that, she should stop talking, whilst they listened to the weather forecast, was perfect satire! In media world, everything is simply a slot.
