This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Another Fine Pledge You Got Me Into!
In Glasgow's Cop26, more than 140 governments 'pledged' to halt and reverse the loss of forests, certainly by 2030 (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/28/destruction-of-pristine-rainforest-globe-relentless-rate-aoe). Forests are, of course, important counters against both global heating and biodiversity loss. The Cop26 pledge has not got off to the greatest start. The World Resources Institute recorded that, in 2021, the tropics lost more than 11 million hectares of tree cover. Trees were notably disappearing in the Brazilian amazon region, the Congo basin and in Siberia. Record wildfires were the major cause of tree loss in Siberia. In most other locations, however, illegal/semi-legal logging was the main problem. Pledging is the easy part!
