This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

I'll Be Watching You?
In the days of Trump, Peter McIndoe decided to have some satirical fun, with counter-demonstrators in Memphis, Tennessee. He joined them, holding a placard saying 'Birds Aren't Real' (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/apr/14/the-lunacy-is-getting-more-intense-how-birds-arent-real-took-on-the-conspiracy-theorists). When asked to explain his sign, McIndoe improvised, saying he had been working for a bird conservation organisation. They had, however, failed. All birds had been eliminated, before being replaced by feathered, surveillance drones. He was filmed and the clip went viral on Facebook. It got hundreds of thousands of followers. Most young people seemed to realise that 'Birds Aren't Real' was actually an attack on conspiracy theorists (a conspiracy within a conspiracy). The conspiracy theorists, however, initially thought McIndoe was one of them. They now believe 'Birds Aren't Real' is a CIA plot to discredit them. This is clearly no longer the age of enlightenment!
