This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Shedding 17kg For an Information Blitz
A demonstrator went on a 37 day hunger strike outside the UK Parliament, losing 17kg in the process. He has now been successful, in his demand that the Chief Scientific Officer briefs Members of Parliament (MPs) about climate change (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/20/mps-to-get-scientific-briefing-on-climate-after-activists-hunger-strike). The Chief Scientific Officer's briefing, when it occurs, will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all MPs, including those, who do not turn up in person. Although information about the climate crisis is freely available, the demonstrator was rightly concerned by the apparent relative ignorance of some MPs. He hoped that, laying out the information clearly, would help 'leaders' to enact the right policies. That might help, in some cases. Vested interests and self-advancement are, however, likely to motivate others. The UK demonstrator took his inspiration from a Swiss national, who spent 39 days on hunger strike outside his own Parliament. Clearly, more than 30 days on hunger strike are needed, before any Parliament, takes (or pretends to take?), their legislator's information gaps on climate change seriously. There are actually very few scientists in Parliaments. Most UK MPs, for example, did a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, from a single University.
