This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Egging Them Off Obesity?
The giving of chocolate 'Easter eggs' is actually a hangover from a pagan, Spring fertlity tradition. Eggs were a symbol of post-winter renewal. The sales of the chocolate versions of eggs, have now become a massive profits opportunity for UK supermarkets. Sales, however, are hopefully likely to be much reduced in Easter 2023, when the government's 'anti-obesity strategy' finally comes into play (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/apr/16/last-rites-supermarkets-annual-easter-egg-bonanza-to-end). The anti-obesity strategy aims to clamp down on foods High in Fats, Salt or Sugar (HFSS). It seems likely that aisle displays of chocolate Easter eggs (clearly HFSS!) in supermarkets will be strongly discouraged. The 'Buy One Get One Free' (BOGOF) offers on chocolate eggs are also likely to disappear. Whether the strategy will actually reduce the consumption of HFSS foods, remains to be seen! People can always buy chocolate egg online?
