This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Coal Own Goal?
A Global Energy Monitor report gives some good news and some bad news. The good news is that, around the world, the number of coal-fired power plants under development fell in 2021. The bad news is that far too much coal is still being burned, to generate electricity (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/26/too-many-new-coal-fired-plants-planned-for-15c-climate-goal-report-concludes). That Global Energy Monitor report noted that old coal-fired power stations were not being taken out of service and more are planned for development (especially in China) after 2022. These activities will make it very difficult/impossible to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Centigrade above pre-Industrial values.
