This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

The Eight Dandelions a Day Diet?
Eight dandelions produce enough nectar to provide the baseline energy needs of an adult bumblebee. The Plantlife organisation are, again, urging gardeners to join their 'No Mow May' campaign (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/29/no-mow-may-gardeners-not-to-cut-lawns-wild-plants-insects). If gardeners leave their lawnmowers in the shed in May, wild flowers will bloom amongst the grass. Buttercups, daisies and dandelions will consequently provide nectar and pollen for many insects, boosting their numbers. It's gratifying to learn that you can do good by simply not working!
