This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Polluters Not Prosecuted!
English farms are major sources of water pollution. Legislation, designed to reduce the resultant environmental damage, was introduced in 2018. In spite of this, a record number (circa 400) of cases of water pollution from farms, were reported in 2021-2022 (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/21/breaches-of-english-farm-pollution-laws-rise-as-rules-remain-largely-unenforced). Four hundred sounds a lot but it's probably 'the tip of the iceberg'. It's estimated that tens of thousands of English farms carry out undocumented water pollution violations. The reason is very simple. Farmers are well aware the 2018 rules are largely unenforced. Most farmers will simply ignore legislation to maximise their profits. They will argue to themselves 'Why should I incur the costs, when nobody else bothers?' 'Surely, that would be putting my business at a disadvantage?' Legislation is less than pointless, without enforcement.
