This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

How to Deal With Wildlife Crime: Just 'Rebrand' the Police Team?
The saga of the protected White-tailed eagle, found poisoned on a Dorset estate, continues to raise eyebrows (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/22/disbanding-of-dorset-wildlife-team-puts-birds-pray-at-risk). Dorset police's Wildlife Crime Team is now to be 'rebranded', with all references to wildlife, removed. Some involved folk strongly suspect that pressure from prominent landowners and a local politician has produced this 'change of focus'. They are rightly concerned that this example could be followed elsewhere, in spite of government claims to have concerns for environmental issues. Perhaps we should note the misspelling, in the above link, and simply 'pray' for birds of prey? It's coming to something, however, when illegal acts will not get investigated, by the police service!
