This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

The British Museum 'Laundromat'?
Climate scientists and Archaeologists have written a joint letter to the British Museum's board of trustees, urging them to cut their links to a British Petroleum (BP) sponsorship deal (https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2022/apr/19/climate-and-heritage-experts-call-on-british-museum-to-end-bp-sponsorship). The BP sponsorship deal is 'small beer' for the petrochemicals giant. It is, however, an important 'greenwashing' opportunity for BP. The letter writers maintain that BP sponsorship damages the reputation of the British Museum (it does). Links of museums with Industry have, however, been actively encouraged by government over several decades. It's difficult to keep museums entry-free without sponsorship, in the absence of appropriate government financial provision. If the museums were properly funded, they wouldn't even be tempted to help the 'greenwashers'.
