Boomerang Beef

The UK government seems intent of rushing through a trade deal with Australia (to partly compensate for declining trade with the EU on our doorstep). UK farmers have, naturally, expressed concerns about the possibility of their markets being flooded with cheap, tarrif-free Australian beef and lamb. The Australian farming lobby has now 'rushed' to reassure British farmers that any meat imports will be 'modest' and entirely determined by UK demand (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/may/19/australian-farmers-rush-to-reassure-uk-over-looming-free-trade-agreement). People, everywhere, are being encouraged to eat less meat to help counter climate change. So increasing importation from a really distant country seems counterintuitive. We will be encouraging more methane burps by herds of Australian cattle (methane is a more potent 'greenhouse gas' than carbon dioxide). And then lots of carbon dioxide, will be released into the atmosphere, refrigerating and transporting it to the UK. Do we really need to do this?
