This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Waking Up a to Whale
It's not every day, my breakfast news includes an account of a small Minke whale being trapped in Richmond's lock (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/may/09/small-whale-gets-stuck-at-lock-on-thames-in-south-west-london). The lock (a place where boats can move between areas with differing water depths) is well up the Thames river, in south-west London. The Minke, in question, was a young animal, around 3-4 m (the species can grow up to 10 m in length). The whale was stuck on the rollers that the lock has in place help move boats. The animal has been freed but will be assessed for injuries, before possible release out to sea.

Sadly (but predictably), the young whale had to be euthanized.
