This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Gone Fishing
Angling (fishing with a rod) has surged in popularity in the UK's Covid-19 pandemic (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/may/15/net-profit-tackle-shop-sales-soar-as-uk-catches-fishing-bug-in-lockdown-covid). Angling is a way of enjoying the outdoors, in a physically distanced way (folk are naturally spaced about 2m apart). The police, also don't seem to question the legitimacy of fishing (unlike drinking coffee on a bench). It seems that thousands of people have recently taken up, what was already the UK's most popular active 'sport'. Retailers specialising in fishing tackle (and bait?), are said to be struggling to keep up with demand. And, record numbers of women are applying for fishing licences.
