This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Covid19 Also Kills Some People With Drink!
In 2020 in England and Wales, the Office for National Statistics found that almost 7500 people died as a direct consequence of alcohol misuse (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/may/06/deaths-from-alcohol-misuse-in-england-and-wales-hit-20-year-high-in-2020). This record death rate from alcohol misuse, started to rise, at the beginning of the first Covid-19 lockdown in the UK. It then increased sharply, in each subsequent quarter. The victims were mostly people who already had a long-term drink problem. Their increased death rate was probably due to a combination of social isolation and being cut off from counselling and/or medical help. They would have had no problem getting booze, as this was freely available online from supermarkets. Even vulnerable people, who were self-isolating because of a medical condition, could get it (no questions asked). It's amazing how many different ways a little virus can get you!
