This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Bright and White?
Titanium dioxide (E171) is a colouring agent much used in the UK to whiten foods. E171 is used to brighten chewing gum; sauces for toddlers; toothpaste and white chocolate. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have now ruled that E171 is carcinogenic (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/06/e171-eu-watchdog-says-food-colouring-widely-used-in-uk-is-unsafe). E171 was already banned in France but was used in several other EU countries. The EFSA analysed thousands of studies to conclude, that this food colouring agent causes cancer. White doesn't always mean 'clean' or safe!
