This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Not Just Coal
It does not appear that it is just coal playing, well-lubricated games with the health of the planet and its citizens. A number of US states (notably Lousiana, New Mexico and Texas) are reported to be attempting to bring in legislation blocking any curbs on oil and gas production (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/may/09/louisiana-bill-fossil-fuel-sanctuary). State politicians (often seemingly funded by oil companies) are arguing that they have to bring in laws to give gas and oil 'sanctuary' from US government environmental plans. Government wants to limit 'greenhouse gas' emissions, by moving energy production to wind and solar power. The politicians claim they have to change state law to protect revenue and jobs. Some of this is going on in areas (like Shreveport in Louisiana) with very high levels of air pollution and rocketing cancer levels. Strangely enough, neither the owners of the oil fields nor the politicians seem to live in such areas.
