This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Making an Exhibition of Them?
Rowan Moore objects to living trees being used as art installations or to 'decorate' city centre buildings (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/may/16/theres-a-time-and-place-for-trees). Moore's point is that there is a time and place for trees. Namely, in the natural soil and growing now. He thinks their exhibition is an 'affront to living trees', as well as rather defeating any intended environmental message. I have a certain sympathy for his viewpoint. However, to completely avoid exhibiting, one would have to also ban arboreta, bonsai and trees as garden features. Trees are also not sentient beings (at least, I don't think so). They are consequently unlikely to feel affronted by being onshow. My general feeling about trees is the 'more the merrier' and in as many locations as possible.
