This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Rocket Man?
A long article poses the question 'Will Virgin Galactic ever take off?' (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/may/02/will-virgin-galactic-ever-lift-off-richard-bransons-space-mission-is-still-stuck-on-earth). Virgin Galactic was Richard Branson's attempt to bring space flight to paying ($200,000 a shot) customers. The programme has been in development about 15 years but has, to date, flown no customers. Four engineers have died. I suppose Virgin Galactic can be linked to Elon Musk's Space X and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. Mega rich folk doing space initiatives. The broad answer to the initial question ought to be 'never, it's to be hoped'. The carbon emissions, associated with space flight, are (forgive the pun) astronomical. The last thing needed, as valiant attempts are made to counter climate change, is to find new ways of adding to the problem. Flying a few rich punters into space for a several minutes of ego-tripping is far from a priority.
